Home Office
Organization Tips
With
more and more people working from home and escaping the 9-5 commute,
a well organized home office will not only ensure you stay efficient
but will help you be more professional when managing your business.
Think about the
environment you need
To get organized you need
to be clear what type of office environment you need. Do you need to
meet clients at home or is it a personal workspace? How much space
do you need? Does the space need to work as another functional room
as well? Having a clear idea of how you need the space to work for
you is the first step.
If the room is solely
dedicated to being your home office, get rid of anything that isn’t
directly connected to your business. This eliminates unnecessary
clutter and removes any distractions. If it is a multi-functional
room, organise the space so that the areas are clearly defined.
Filing systems
There are so many
different filing systems out there from traditional filing cabinets
to hanging folders that go on the back of the door so there is
something to suit everyone no matter what space you have. Start by
sorting all the papers in your office and deciding what you need to
keep and what can be thrown away. If you are not sure about some
items, put them aside in a box for now and make a point of going
back to it later once the rest of the space is organized. Whatever
filing system you choose, keeping on top of it on a daily basis is
best. It is easier to sort through a few business papers each day
than tackle a huge pile once a month.
Workspace
The workspace is the most
important area and if you plan to spend many hours in your home
office, it is essential that this space is comfortable and that you
desk / work area is at the right height for you to avoid back
strain. You can be much more productive if you are comfortable.
Desk organisers are a
good way to keep essential items close to hand but keep clutter to a
minimum by ensuring that items that you don’t use often are stored
away in a drawer or box. Drawer organizers are also a great idea to
stop the clutter being moved from one place to another!
If you use a computer in
your office, ensure there is enough comfortable workplace. A
multi-purpose unit is an option if you need to create more space.
Don’t forget to keep your computer organized as well. Use software
programs to keep your appointments and set up files so that you
don’t spend ages looking for documents every time you log on.
Databases or spreadsheets are also a great way of keeping a list of
work tasks or software details.
Because it is used so
much if you are a home worker, it can seem a chore to keep your
workspace well organized but in the long term, it will reduce time
spent working and more time relaxing.
