How to Organize My Home
My Whole House is Disorganized,Where Do I Start?

how to organize my homeWhen our homes are organized, life just seems so much easier to manage.  When clutter and disorganization take over it can be totally overwhelming and get to the point where you just don’t know what to start on first!  Living around the clutter every day becomes a chore and makes it harder for you to relax properly at home.

You can't do it all at once!
Although it sometimes seems like the clutter appeared overnight, it usually hasn’t.  It is often the result of weeks or months of not being on top of things until it feels like it is too much to tackle.  It is important to take it one step at a time and the first step is realising that it can’t all be sorted out in one day.

Make a list
The best way to sort out the chaos in your home is to take a pen and paper and go from room to room.  Make a list of everything that needs to be done and keep this list somewhere visible so that you can see your progress.  Set yourself a goal each day to allocate an achievable amount of time to go through this list.  If you work long hours, you might set a goal of 15-30 minutes a day to work on the list and if you have more time, you might want to set aside an hour or a couple of 30 minute time blocks throughout the day.

Sometimes the worse thing you can do is throw yourself into de-cluttering for hours on end only to get de-motivated along the way and end up back where you started.  By breaking the list down into small manageable chunks that don’t affect your day too much, you are more likely to be motivated to do it and you will be surprised at how quickly the items on your list will be crossed off.

Start small
It is also more motivational to start with either smaller tasks or tasks that have a lot of impact and you can see the improvement in very quickly.  This may be clearing out a cluttered corner in your main living space, clearing your closet or clearing the workspace in your kitchen – anything where you can reap the immediate benefits to spur you on to do more.

Consistency is key
As you work your way through your list, you may find that some tasks take longer than the time you have put aside each day and this is fine – you can just do a bit each day working on the same area until it gets done.  You don’t need to put a few hours aside for that particular task unless you really want to.  Smaller, more consistent steps are easier to keep up and still give you time to enjoy the rest of your day.

Keep the momentum going
Once you have worked your way through your list, try and maintain the allocated daily time to maintain all of your hard work.  Even better, return things to their rightful place as you go and you will have even less to maintain in the long run.

If you are not the tidiest person in the world and you know that you struggle to stay organised, this little and often schedule should work much better for you.  There is nothing wrong with a little clutter now and then, life is for living and keeping everything perfectly in place is not always practical.  What is important is that your disorganization is not affecting your stress levels and taking over your home.
