What Are You Waiting For?

Have you ever put something off until you were at a certain point in your life where in your mind everything would be perfect? I will use weight as an example here but this could apply to any area of your life where we wait for everything to be perfect before we do something.

I’m sure I am not the only one who thinks ‘I’ll do that / go there / buy that when I lose a few more lbs!’ Many of us put things off because our weight or something else in our lives isn’t perfect right at this moment. If so many of us do this - why does it happen?

It could well be that you are using your weight (or whatever your issue is) as an excuse to put things off. It is hard to believe that when you don’t seem to be able to control your eating, you may be subconsciously sabotaging your efforts. This is because we fear change or worry that we won’t be able to handle what is expected of us once the weight or issue is out of the way! All the while it is there, it can be a great excuse to hide behind.

Does any of this seem familiar to you? Can you identify the real reasons why you are holding onto your weight or something else that is holding you back in life? There is always a reason behind our actions - it is sometimes just very hard to find, or we choose not to find it! We create physical and mental barriers to protect ourselves and there is nothing wrong with that - we do the best that we can in the present moment.

Here are some steps to identify and start overcoming these barriers:

  • Self acceptance - don’t blame yourself for being in the position that you are in. There is a reason that your life is as it is and you need to trust that you have done your best up till now to nurture yourself in your present situation.

  • If your weight is holding you back, imagine that you have had a spell put upon you and your weight will never change again - you won't lose and you won't gain. Now that this is something you can't change are you going to let it stop you from living your life the way you want to?

  • Make a list of what you want to achieve or what you have been putting off until now. This does not have to be any overly ambitious achievements or something you consider out of your reach - small steps are perfect! Next to the list of what you want to achieve, list the possible excuses you have been making to avoid going for your goals.

  • Now take each goal and write down actions you can take that will move you closer to your goal.

  • Keep the list close by - take 1 or 2 items that you can do for yourself in the coming week that move you that much closer to your goal and do them! Once you have achieved that - keep taking small steps to move closer and closer to what you want.

  • Don't forget to reward yourself along the way - we sometimes achieve so much without giving ourselves the recognition that we deserve.

  • Look into resources that might help you - there is a huge amount of information out there on the web and something for everyone. Subscribe to this site and I will bring you some great wellbeing resources in the future!

Sometimes, even identifying that our current actions are protecting ourselves because we fear change or progress is a huge step forward. Remember - one step at a time is all it takes! Just be honest with yourself and more importantly accept yourself just as you are - only then you will be in the position to make some real changes.
